Tuesday morning, the Premier Hockey Federation announced the league’s Board Of Governors will be committing 25 million dollars to the league over the next three years.
The salary cap will more than double from its current $300,000 to $750,000 in the 2022-23 season. On top of the salary cap increase, the players will be seeing full healthcare benefits, including paid maternity leave. Updated facilities and equipment is part of the commitment as well.
Next season will be looking different as well. The season will increase to 28 games opposed to their current 20.
The league will grow from six to eight teams over the next two years as well. Montreal is already confirmed but the second city has yet to be announced. Many have speculated Chicago, Pittsburgh, or Detroit as a possibility.
With an increased cap and upgrade in facilities, the league continues to focus on closing the divide in women’s hockey as well as growing the game and encouraging new athletes to join the league. Players will also be in control over their own imagine and likeness which will be important for those interested in sponsorships.
