It appears that a change of scenery is exactly what forward Sam Bennett needed.
Earlier this season, Sam Bennett reportedly told Calgary Flames’ General Manager Brad Treliving that he wanted a “change of scenery.” He had a change of heart once there was a coaching change in Calgary.
“I’m definitely looking forward to starting fresh here and proving my worth again,” said Bennett to Calgary media.
After being a healthy scratch and a shift in the room, Bennett was not finding success under Geoff Ward. Sutter was Bennett’s last change to find his game.
Ahead of the trade deadline, Sutter was asked about Bennett and if he was on the trade block. Sutter denied the claims that Bennett was still looking for a trade.
Bennett was traded right before the deadline to the Florida Panthers for Emile Heineman and a second round pick in 2022. While Calgary has a lot up in the air in regards to their future, it appears that Bennett has found his footing.
In just 4 games, Bennett has 3 goals and 2 assists. He has been skating with Anthony Duclair and Jonathan Huberdeau. When you surround a player with players who can elevate their game, they will find success.
Bennett is a player who typically comes alive in the playoffs. Seeing this kind of consistent scoring during the regular season is impressive and out of the ordinary. Calgary couldn’t find players to bring him to the next level. He was clearly capable of being that type of player. It’s been in him all along.
With Florida currently in second place in the Central Division, there is a strong chance that this trade benefits Florida right away. Is Sam Bennett the Panthers need to make a strong push in the playoffs?
