A Harsh Reminder For David Backes

David Backes is doubtful for the next few games after colliding with Ottawa Senator, Scott Sabourin Saturday night. It was a bloody hit that left game play paused for over ten minutes. You could see the remorse in David Backes’ eyes the second Sabourin hit the ice.

If you watched the replay of the hit, you’d see Sabourin pretty much go limp while still in the air. Backes didn’t go unscathed either, though. He wouldn’t come back for the remainder of the game after Sabourin was taken to the hospital. Many speculated he went to the hospital to be with Scott Sabourin or he was maybe too emotional too return. After the game we got some answers. It appears he was dealing with some upper body, more than likely head, issues. Bruce Cassidy said he got checked out Sunday morning and he’s doubtful for the next few games.

Put all of that aside, lets talk about a deeper issue. Not only could you see remorse in Backes’ eyes but the pain. He had been where Sabourin was and he’s seen teammates there before as well. I’m sure it’s different on all ends but being the one that sends a player to the hospital, has to hurt a little more.

Could that have been Backes’ final straw? Would another concussion be too much for him to handle? What will it mean for the hits he goes to make in the future?

There’s a lot left on the table for David Backes… $18 million to be exact. No one wants their career to end in a low note but it’s almost better to walk away while you still can.
