Picture this: It’s the bottom of the ninth inning and your team is down three runs. You’re on deck, waiting for your chance. The bases are loaded and there are two outs. Here’s your chance… You step up to the plate and hit a WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM. What an incredible comeback! You start the celebration with a poor excuse of a bat flip. Do you think you did anything wrong?
I can’t imagine what was going through David Bote’s mind when he saw that ball soar out of the ballpark. He flipped his bat and began his trip around the bases. I really don’t think he flipped the bat out of spite. Was he supposed to hand it to the bat boy? Would it be deemed disrespectful if he just dropped it? Why the heck are people so focused on celebrations anyways?
People who like to suck the fun out of everything seem to have an issue with the bat flip. I’m pretty sure that those are the same people who yell at cashiers when they don’t accept their expired coupon.
He ended up apologizing. Yeah, you read that right. A guy who completed a comeback with a grand slam said sorry for flipping his bat. Why can’t people have fun? If other sports can embrace celebrations, why can’t baseball?
There are things the MLB can improve on. They should work on embracing the new generation that follows their sport so it doesn’t die. Personally, I hope players keep flipping their bats. Better yet, do it and do it unapologetically. Why should you tone it down for a bunch of old people who don’t like to have fun?
